Upgrading to ExpressionEngine 7: The Complete Guide - Whether You’re on EE2, EE4 or EE6

If your site isn't on ExpressionEngine 7, there's a good chance PHP is already the problem, or is about to be. Every version from EE2 to EE5 is running on PHP that is either end of life or running out of road, and hosting companies are actively pushing server upgrades. When that push meets an old ExpressionEngine installation, things break.

The good news is that ExpressionEngine 7 is a well-built, actively maintained platform. It has a modern control panel, a genuinely flexible content architecture, and it's absolutely worth the investment of getting there. How complex that journey is depends entirely on where you're starting from.

Here's what you need to know.

Which Version Are You On, and What Does It Mean?

The urgency and the complexity of an upgrade vary depending on your starting point. Here's a quick read of where each version stands.

ExpressionEngine 2, 3, 4, or 5. All of these versions are end of life, receive no security updates, and are not compatible with PHP 8. PHP 7.x is entirely end of life too, which means hosting companies pushing server upgrades will break your site if you're still running on any of them. The urgency is the same across all four; the complexity of the upgrade varies depending on how old the site is and how far it has to travel.

ExpressionEngine 6. EE6 is in reasonable shape. It runs on PHP 8.2 and isn't under the same immediate pressure as older versions. But EE6 is no longer in active development, which means no new features and no guarantee of future security patches as PHP continues to evolve. EE7 is where ongoing development is happening, and the sensible time to make the move is while it's still a straightforward single-step upgrade rather than waiting until the gap widens further.

The Upgrade Path Depends on Where You're Starting From

Not all ExpressionEngine upgrades follow the same route. The approach differs significantly depending on your current version.

From EE2, EE3, or EE4 - the gap to EE7 is substantial. The database structure, the add-on API, template handling, and PHP requirements have all changed significantly across multiple major releases. Jumping straight to EE7 in a single step is not safe. For most sites, the most reliable route involves staged migration through intermediate versions. For some older EE2 builds with complex custom templates and deeply embedded add-ons, a structured fresh EE7 installation with a content migration can actually be the cleaner option. This is hands-on ExpressionEngine CMS work, and careful scoping before anything else begins is what determines whether the upgrade goes smoothly.

From EE5 - the PHP barrier is the same, but you're starting considerably closer to EE7. Fewer version stages are typically needed, and the add-on landscape is somewhat less complicated than from EE2. The project is still meaningful, but the scope and risk are lower.

From EE6 - this is a single-step upgrade to EE7, and in most cases the most manageable ExpressionEngine upgrade there is. Add-ons still need auditing, templates may need minor adjustments, and the server environment may need updating to meet EE7's PHP 8 requirement. But the structural changes between EE6 and EE7 are incremental, and no staged migration is needed.

What Changed in ExpressionEngine 5 and 6

If you're already on EE6, you can skip ahead to the EE7 section - you'll likely know this already.

ExpressionEngine 5 was a transitional release rather than a dramatic overhaul, but it introduced some genuinely useful improvements.

Live Preview arrived. Content editors could finally see how their entries would look on the front end before publishing, which was a long-overdue addition for anyone managing content-heavy or complex page layouts.

Member management was overhauled. Roles, permissions, and member groups became more flexible and easier to manage. If your site uses membership functionality of any kind, this area requires careful attention during an upgrade.

PHP requirements began to step up. EE5 required a more recent PHP version than EE2 and EE3 had, meaning server environments also needed addressing before any upgrade work could begin.

ExpressionEngine 6 was a significantly more substantial release, making changes to how the platform feels to use day to day.

The control panel was rebuilt from the ground up. Cleaner, more modern, and considerably more intuitive. Anyone who has spent time in the EE2 or EE3 admin interface will notice the difference immediately.

The Fluid field type was introduced. EE6's headline feature. Fluid fields allow content editors to build flexible, modular page layouts by combining different field types in whatever order suits the content, effectively a native page builder built into the CMS. For sites that had been relying on third-party add-ons to achieve this kind of flexibility, it was a significant and welcome development.

PHP requirements increased. EE6 requires PHP 7.2.5 as a minimum. Hosting environments on older PHP versions needed updating before the upgrade could take place.

Add-on compatibility changed substantially. A number of add-ons that worked in EE3 and EE4 were not updated for EE6. This is covered in more detail in the next section.

What Changed in ExpressionEngine 7

ExpressionEngine 7 is the current version, actively maintained by Packet Tide. It's the right destination for any upgrade project, whatever version you're coming from.

PHP 8 is now required. EE7 requires PHP 8.0 as a minimum, but can run PHP 8.4. For sites on EE2 through EE5, this means a server environment update before anything else. For EE6 sites, the same PHP 8 requirement applies, and this is precisely what makes the EE6 to EE7 move the sensible choice for any site that wants to be fully supported.

Coilpack was introduced. An optional Laravel-based package that allows ExpressionEngine to function as a headless or hybrid CMS, with Blade template rendering for developers who want a more modern workflow. Not every site will use it, but it's a meaningful signal about where the platform is heading.

Native functionality was expanded. EE7 handles natively a number of things that previously required third-party add-ons. For sites where legacy add-ons have become a liability, this is a genuine benefit, reducing reliance on the ecosystem and making the site more resilient.

Security was improved throughout. Updated authentication, better session handling, and general hardening across the platform. For any site that has been sitting on an older version without security updates, this is really important.

What About Your Add-ons? (This Applies to Every Version)

The add-on situation looks different depending on your starting version, but it requires a proper audit in every case.

If you're on EE2, EE3, or EE4, this is likely the most complex part of your upgrade. ExpressionEngine's add-on ecosystem was enormous at its peak, with hundreds of add-ons for forms, galleries, SEO, navigation, e-commerce, calendars, member portals, and much more. Most EE2 sites were built with several essential add-ons doing critical jobs. A large number of those add-ons are now abandoned, and EE7-compatible versions simply don't exist for many of them.

If you're on EE5 or EE6, the picture is better but still needs attention. Add-ons that survived through to EE6 have a higher chance of having been updated for EE7, but not all of them have been. Every add-on still needs checking before any upgrade work begins.

In every case, the same questions apply for each add-on your site depends on: Does a compatible EE7 version exist? If not, is there a suitable alternative? Can EE7's expanded native functionality cover what the add-on was doing? Or does something need to be built custom?

This audit always comes first. There is no point starting any migration without a clear picture of what you're working with.

What Does an Upgrade Actually Involve?

Here's how I approach an ExpressionEngine upgrade project in practice, whatever the starting version:

Audit first. I review your current setup in full. This includes the ExpressionEngine version, PHP version, database version, every add-on, template code, and any custom functionality. This gives a clear picture of the scope before any work begins.

Environment preparation. Your hosting environment needs to meet EE7's requirements. All of this is done on a development environment first, so your live site stays completely untouched until everything is verified and ready. I offer website hosting on my dedicated server, which has been tailored specifically to host ExpressionEngine websites.

Migration. For EE2, EE3, or EE4 sites, this typically means staged migration through intermediate versions, or a fresh-install approach with content migration. For EE5 sites, fewer stages are usually involved. For EE6 sites, it's a single-step upgrade which is carried out carefully and tested thoroughly, but considerably more straightforward.

Add-on resolution. Any add-on without an EE7-compatible version gets resolved at this point, either finding an alternative, replicating functionality natively in EE7, or building something custom where needed.

Testing. Everything is tested before anything goes live: content types, forms, member functionality, front-end rendering, custom code.

Launch and monitoring. The upgraded site goes live. I keep a close eye on things in the days that follow to catch anything unexpected.

Throughout all of this, you deal directly with me - no support tickets, no chatbots, no call centres - just honest, straightforward, support.

Is This Also a Good Time for a Rebuild?

Especially for older sites, it's something I often recommend considering. A site built 10 or 15 years ago is carrying a lot of history - an ageing design, template architecture that may be difficult to migrate cleanly, and a structure that may no longer reflect the business as it stands today. In those cases, combining the upgrade with a website redesign or full redevelopment on ExpressionEngine 7 often makes more sense, both in practical terms and financial ones. Done together it's typically more cost-effective than tackling them separately, and you come out the other side with a site that's modern inside and out.

Should You Consider Moving to a Different CMS?

If ExpressionEngine has served you well and you would prefer to stay on a familiar platform, sticking with ExpressionEngine and upgrading is often the best decision. If you want to understand why I've been building with ExpressionEngine for over 15 years, this post goes into it in more detail.

If however, following an audit, ExpressionEngine isn't able to cater for your requirements, it may be worth exploring whether Craft CMS or Statamic would be a good fit. Both are platforms I know well and work with regularly, and a well-managed content migration between systems is achievable.

There's no single right answer, but it's a conversation worth having before committing to any particular path.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. ExpressionEngine is maintained and actively developed by Packet Tide, who took over ownership from EllisLab. ExpressionEngine 7 is the current version and receives regular updates.

Yes. ExpressionEngine 6 supports PHP 8.2, so EE6 sites aren't under the same immediate PHP pressure as older versions. However, EE6 is no longer in active development - no new features, and no future security patches as PHP itself continues to evolve. EE7 is where ongoing development is happening, which means staying on EE6 is a diminishing position even if it feels stable today. The upgrade is worth making while it's still a straightforward single step.

Partially, in some later releases of EE6but not cleanly, and not in a way that constitutes a supported, stable setup for a production website. EE7 is the version that was properly built and maintained for PHP 8. If your hosting company is pushing a PHP upgrade, EE6 is not a safe place to stay.

Not safely in a single step. The differences between EE2 and EE7 are too substantial - across database structure, add-on compatibility, template handling, and PHP requirements - for a direct jump to be reliable. Most projects involve staged migration through intermediate versions, or a fresh-install approach with structured content migration. A thorough audit at the outset determines the safest and most practical route for your specific site.

It's a single-step upgrade, and generally the most manageable ExpressionEngine upgrade there is. Your hosting environment needs to meet EE7's PHP 8 requirement, add-ons need checking for EE7 compatibility, and templates may need minor adjustments. All of this is done on a development environment first, with the live site completely untouched until everything has been tested and verified.

ExpressionEngine 7 requires PHP 8.0 as a minimum. EE6 supports up to PHP 8.2, so an EE6 site already running a current PHP version will meet EE7's requirements without any server changes needed. For sites on EE2 through EE5, a server environment update will be needed as part of the upgrade.

If your site is running on EE2, EE3, EE4, or EE5, then yes, almost certainly. These versions are not compatible with PHP 8, and a forced PHP upgrade will very likely bring your site down.

This is one of the most important questions in any EE upgrade project. Many third-party add-ons built for older versions of ExpressionEngine have not been updated for EE7. For each add-on your site depends on, it needs to be established whether a compatible version exists, whether a suitable alternative is available, or whether EE7's expanded native functionality can cover what the add-on was doing. This audit always comes before any migration work begins.

If you have access to the control panel, the version number is displayed in the footer. If you don't have access or aren't sure, get in touch and I can help you find out.

It depends on your starting version and the complexity of your site. An EE6 to EE7 upgrade on a reasonably clean site can often be done in a few days. An EE2 site with many add-ons and bespoke functionality will take longer. Get in touch and I will happily provide a tailored estimate.

Yes, when handled correctly. All upgrade and migration work is carried out on a development environment first, with your live site left completely untouched until everything has been fully tested and verified.

It depends on your situation. If ExpressionEngine has worked well for you and you want to stay on a platform you know, upgrading to EE7 is often the best choice. If you've been running into add-on gaps or you're already thinking about a significant rebuild, it may be worth exploring Craft CMS or Statamic as alternatives. I know all three platforms well and can give you an honest, unbiased assessment based on your actual site and requirements.

Yes, ExpressionEngine 7 is a mature, capable CMS with a modern control panel and a genuinely flexible content architecture. It suits content-heavy sites with complex structures.

The best first step is to get in touch - I can then review your current setup, identify what an upgrade would involve for your specific site, and provide a tailored estimate.

Working with Chris was an absolute joy. His ability to interpret the rather vague ideas I had for a redesigned website and turn them into something that was visually impressive, clean and simple to navigate was extraordinary. His listening skills are second to none, as is his technical knowledge and the way he manages to explain things to the technically challenged. Regular updates and messaging through a dedicated project platform makes detailed remote discussions during development really easy, and his use of videos that update you on progress and guide you through the use of the content management system are hugely helpful. I can't recommend him highly enough. Thank you Chris!

Chris designed and built what is now my fourth website and it is the very best yet (Also backed up by client comments). It goes without saying that Chris is a very talented designer and has a knack for creating the very best functional and SEO friendly websites for photographers. You only have to look at the list of photographers and tour companies who use and endorse his services to see that. Having worked with a few different web designers over the years however, it was Chris’s organisational skills, communication and reliability that stood out from the rest for me. You are kept informed of progress at every stage, however minor the detail and you feel like you are in safe hands right from the initial consultation. Aside from that, Chris is always on hand (After the build) to help you to update and make changes to your site, as hopefully your business grows. Emails are always answered promptly, and minor glitches and problems which occur along the way with any website are quickly resolved. I have found this ‘post build’ support to be sadly lacking with other designers. If you want to sleep easy knowing your business is in good hands, every penny spent with Chris is a worthwhile investment.

What really stood out was his ability to explain everything in clear, layman’s terms without ever compromising on professionalism — I always knew exactly what was happening, why, and at what cost. He’s incredibly transparent with pricing, highly responsive, and consistently reliable. But beyond that, he genuinely went above and beyond the level of quality I initially expected. Every detail — even the smallest — was handled with care, and he never once pushed back on refinements or changes. That level of patience and precision is rare.I’m now on his quarterly maintenance plan, not just because the website he created is excellent, but because I want to make sure it continues to evolve and improve over time with his guidance and expertise✨️.I couldn’t recommend him more highly.

Working with Chris was a complete delight, anything I wanted to add to my site or customise, or any ideas I needed advice on (and there were plenty) - Chris was there to help and sort out immediately. When it comes to web design there is nothing that he cannot do. If you are looking for a bespoke web design, built and designed by someone who is at the top of their game, then I cannot recommend Chris Davies highly enough.

From the outset Chris was quick to understand our goals, his interpretation of my visuals was precise and completely sympathetic to the design, and his careful explanation of the build process was exemplary. He led me through the decisions to be made as the site evolved, patiently made changes where requested, and after the site went live made time to follow up with the necessary training and support.Working with Chris on our new site has been a pleasure, and I have no hesitation in recommending him.

Chris was a pleasure to work with - during the design, and importantly in terms of ongoing service. He listens to what his clients want, and is patient and flexible should their ideas about the design evolve. I searched long and hard for the right person to design a clean, simple website that showcased images, and did not look 'off the shelf'. I'm delighted by the results that Chris has achieved, and take comfort that if I need to change anything, Chris will be able to help.
